What is a Hollywood smile, really?
“Hollywood smile” is a marketing term, not a dental procedure. It usually means a bright, even, symmetrical row of teeth. You can reach that look in very different ways: sometimes whitening and a little bonding is enough, sometimes it takes veneers on the upper front teeth, and occasionally it needs crowns, gum work and orthodontics together.
Problems start when a clinic sells the look as a fixed package, such as “twenty crowns”, before anyone has examined your mouth. A smile makeover should work the other way round: first decide what the finished smile should look like, then choose the least invasive treatments that will get you there. That is what we mean by smile design.
Smile makeover in Turkey: the building blocks
A full smile makeover in Turkey draws on several treatments. Most plans use two or three of them, not all.
- Teeth whitening lifts the colour of natural teeth and is often done first so other work can be matched to it.
- Composite bonding repairs chips, closes small gaps and evens out edges, usually without drilling.
- Porcelain veneers change the shape, length and colour of sound front teeth with minimal preparation.
- Zirconia or E.max crowns rebuild teeth that are broken, heavily filled or root-filled.
- Gum contouring evens out an uneven or “gummy” gumline so the teeth look properly proportioned.
- Orthodontics, often clear aligners, moves crowded or rotated teeth into a better position so less tooth needs to be prepared later.
Healthy gums come first. If there is gum disease, it is treated before any cosmetic work, because new veneers or crowns placed on inflamed gums rarely look right for long.
How a smile makeover is planned
- Send photos: Share smile photos, a short video and any X-rays on WhatsApp for a free preliminary plan.
- Examination and health check: Free examination and X-ray in Istanbul, with gum health and existing fillings or crowns assessed.
- Digital design and mock-up: Your new smile is designed and tried on your own teeth so you can approve or change it.
- Foundation treatment: Gum treatment, root canals, whitening or gum contouring are done first where needed.
- Final restorations: Veneers, crowns or bonding are prepared, tried in and fitted, often on a second trip.
- Review and protection: The bite is checked, a night guard is made if you grind, and aftercare is explained before you fly.
Digital smile design and the trial smile
Smile design starts with photographs and video of your face, not just your teeth. We look at the line of your lips when you smile and talk, how much tooth and gum shows, the midline of your face, and the proportions between your teeth. From that, a proposed smile is drawn digitally and discussed with you.
The design is then turned into a mock-up: a thin layer of temporary tooth-coloured material placed over your own teeth for an hour or so. You can see it in the mirror, smile, speak, take photos and show someone you trust. This is the best moment to ask for changes, such as shorter teeth, a softer shape or a different shade, because nothing has been prepared yet. Dt. Kadri Söylemez focuses on this design stage and on the restorations that follow it.
How many teeth: 8, 10 or 20?
The number of teeth in a smile makeover is a clinical decision, not a package size. A useful rule is to include the teeth that show in your widest natural smile. For some people that is six to eight upper teeth; for people with broad smiles it can be ten or twelve. Lower teeth are added when they are visible when you talk, or when their colour would not match the new upper teeth.
Plans of twenty or more units do exist, typically when many teeth are worn down, heavily restored or affected by an old failed treatment. For a person with healthy teeth, treating twenty units purely for appearance is usually more than they need. Ask any clinic why each tooth is included; a good plan has a reason for every one.
Natural or very white: choosing a shade
Porcelain can be made in shades far whiter than any natural tooth. Some people want that look, and it is their choice, but very bright, opaque teeth can appear artificial, particularly against an older face or darker skin. A shade that is a step or two lighter than your whitened natural teeth tends to look healthy rather than obviously restored.
We usually show the shade on the mock-up in daylight and by the window, not only under the clinic lights. If the plan includes untreated natural teeth, those are whitened first, because porcelain does not change colour later and your own teeth need to match it.
How long does a smile makeover in Turkey take?
Across the whole plan, active treatment usually adds up to 2–4 weeks, depending on how many teeth are involved and which treatments are combined. Patients generally manage this in one of two ways:
- One longer stay of around two to three weeks, suited to plans without gum surgery or complex root treatment.
- Two trips, where the first covers examination, any root canal or gum treatment, whitening and the trial smile, and the second covers preparation and fitting of the final restorations.
If orthodontics is part of the plan, aligners are worn for months at home before the cosmetic stage, and the timeline changes. We set out the sequence in your written plan; our dental tourism guide explains transfers and accommodation.
Looking at Hollywood smile Turkey before and after photos
Before-and-after photos are useful, but read them carefully. Ask whether the after photo shows veneers or crowns, how many teeth were treated, and how the smile looks a year later. Very white, perfectly identical teeth in bright lighting often hide the fact that healthy teeth were heavily cut down.
The best evidence for your own case is your mock-up. It shows the proposed result on your own face before any irreversible step. Risks to discuss include sensitivity after preparation, chipping or loosening of restorations, gum irritation, and the possibility of not liking the final look; careful planning reduces all of them, but no dentist can remove them completely.
