Root canal treatment in Istanbul

Root canal treatment saves a tooth whose nerve is inflamed, infected or dead by cleaning out the inside of the root, disinfecting it and sealing it. In Istanbul it usually takes one to three sessions, and back teeth normally need a crown afterwards to protect them. Keeping your natural tooth is almost always worth trying before extraction.

Why save the tooth instead of taking it out?

Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve and blood vessels, the pulp, running down narrow channels in each root. Deep decay, a crack or a knock can let bacteria reach it. Once the pulp is badly inflamed or infected, it cannot heal on its own, and infection can spread into the bone at the root tip as an abscess.

Root canal treatment removes that pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them so bacteria cannot return. The tooth no longer has a living nerve, but it stays firmly in the jaw, supported by its own ligament and bone. That matters: a natural tooth keeps the bone around it, needs no surgery and avoids the knock-on costs of replacing it with an implant or bridge. Extraction looks quicker, but it is the beginning of another treatment, not the end of one.

Signs you might need a root canal

Some teeth need root canal treatment with no symptoms at all, and the problem only shows on an X-ray. When there are symptoms, they often include:

  • lingering pain after hot or cold, lasting well after the drink is gone;
  • throbbing toothache that wakes you at night;
  • pain when biting on one tooth;
  • a gum boil or pimple near a tooth that may leak a bad taste;
  • a tooth that has darkened after an old injury;
  • swelling of the gum or face.

Facial swelling with fever, or swelling that affects swallowing or breathing, needs urgent medical attention, not a scheduled appointment.

Root canal treatment, step by step

  1. Examination and X-ray: Free examination and X-ray to confirm the diagnosis, check the root shape and give you a written plan and cost.
  2. First session: Under local anaesthetic the tooth is opened, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and either sealed or dressed with medicine.
  3. Second or third session if needed: For molars and infected teeth, the canals are cleaned again and permanently filled once symptoms have settled.
  4. Core and protection: The tooth is sealed with a filling or core. On back teeth a crown is usually planned.
  5. Crown fitting: Where a crown is advised, it is prepared and fitted during the same stay when timing allows.

Root canal treatment in Istanbul: how many sessions?

Most root canal treatments in Istanbul take one to three sessions. A front tooth with a single straight canal can often be finished in one visit. A molar may have three or four canals, sometimes curved or narrow, and a tooth with an active abscess is often dressed with a disinfecting medicine between visits so the infection settles before the final seal.

A typical session involves:

  1. numbing the tooth with local anaesthetic;
  2. isolating it with a thin rubber sheet (a dental dam) so saliva and bacteria stay out;
  3. opening the tooth and locating every canal;
  4. measuring, cleaning and shaping the canals while rinsing with disinfectant solutions;
  5. filling the canals with a rubber-like material and sealer, then closing the top.

X-rays are taken along the way to check the length and quality of the filling. Because a missed canal is a common reason for later failure, a thorough search for all of them matters more than speed.

Does a root canal hurt? Separating myth from reality

The pain most people associate with root canals is the toothache that comes before it. With effective local anaesthetic, the treatment itself usually feels similar to having a large filling. A very inflamed tooth can be harder to numb, and the dentist may add more anaesthetic or give a medicated dressing first.

Afterwards, the tooth can be tender to bite on for a few days while the tissues around the root settle; ordinary painkillers normally manage this. Two other myths are worth clearing up. Root canal treatment does not "cause illness elsewhere in the body"; that idea came from research a century ago that has not stood up. And a root-filled tooth is not "dead" in a way that harms you; it is simply without a nerve.

Root canal and crown: why back teeth usually need one

A tooth that needs a root canal has often already lost a lot of structure to decay, old fillings or cracks, and opening it to reach the canals removes a little more. Back teeth take heavy chewing forces, and without protection a root-filled molar or premolar is more likely to split, sometimes in a way that cannot be repaired.

For that reason, a crown is usually recommended on back teeth after root canal treatment. Front teeth with plenty of healthy structure left may only need a good filling. If you are planning root canal and crown work in Istanbul in one trip, the root canal comes first, and the zirconia crown is prepared once the tooth is settled. Your dentist will plan the order of appointments so both fit within your stay where possible.

Root canal retreatment and when it is not the answer

Root canal treatment has a high long-term success rate in the dental literature, but some teeth develop problems years later. Common causes are a canal that was missed or not cleaned to its full length, a leaking filling or crown letting bacteria back in, or a new crack.

Retreatment means removing the old root filling, cleaning the canals again and resealing them. It is more complex than a first treatment and can take more sessions. If retreatment through the crown is not possible, root-end surgery (apicectomy) is sometimes an option; our oral surgery page explains it.

Not every tooth can or should be saved. A tooth with a vertical root fracture, very little remaining structure or severe gum disease may have a poor outlook, and an honest dentist will say so. In that case we discuss replacement options, such as an implant, rather than carrying out treatment unlikely to last.

Planning root canals before veneers or crowns

If you are coming to Istanbul for veneers, crowns or a smile makeover, the health of the teeth underneath comes before the cosmetic work. We check every tooth involved on X-ray. A tooth with a hidden infection, a failing old root filling or a nerve that is already dying should be treated before anything is bonded or cemented on top of it, because treating it afterwards means drilling through a brand-new crown or veneer.

Root canal treatment can also darken a front tooth over time. Where one discoloured root-filled tooth sits among healthy ones, internal bleaching or a single crown may be enough, avoiding the need to cover healthy neighbours. Our page on veneers in Turkey covers that conservative approach.

Root canal Istanbul cost: what it depends on

The cost of root canal treatment depends mainly on the tooth: a single-canal front tooth is simpler than a four-canal molar. Retreatment of an old root filling, removal of a post, curved or calcified canals, the number of sessions and whether a crown follows all affect the total. After your free examination and X-ray we give you the treatment plan and cost in writing. If you are travelling, send a recent X-ray on WhatsApp and we can tell you how many sessions to allow for. Root canal treatment in Turkey fits well into a short trip as long as the sessions are spread sensibly; our dental tourism guide covers the practical side.

Who carries out root canal treatment here?

Berke Erdal focuses on root canal treatment and restorative dentistry and also works on implant-supported restorations. Complex cases are discussed within the team before treatment begins, so you have more than one dentist looking at your X-rays.

Frequently asked questions

How many visits does root canal treatment take?
Usually one to three. A front tooth with one canal can often be finished in a single session. Molars with several canals, or teeth with an active infection that needs a medicated dressing first, normally need two or three. Your dentist can estimate this from the X-ray before you book.
How much does root canal treatment cost in Istanbul?
It depends on which tooth is treated, how many canals it has, whether it is a first treatment or a retreatment, and whether a crown follows. We do not quote without seeing an X-ray. After the free examination, you receive the full plan and total cost in writing.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
On back teeth, usually yes, because root-filled molars and premolars are more prone to cracking under chewing forces. Front teeth with plenty of healthy structure left can often be restored with a filling. The dentist decides based on how much of the tooth remains.
Is a root canal painful?
With local anaesthetic, most people find it similar to a long filling. The tooth may be tender to bite on for a few days afterwards, which ordinary painkillers usually control. The severe pain people fear is usually the infection before treatment, which root canal treatment relieves.
Can I fly after root canal treatment?
Yes. Flying does not affect a completed root canal. If a tooth is between sessions with a temporary filling, mention your travel dates so the dentist can make sure the temporary seal is secure and the infection has settled before you leave.
What is root canal retreatment?
Retreatment redoes an earlier root canal that has become reinfected, often because a canal was missed or the seal leaked. The old filling material is removed, the canals cleaned again and resealed. It is more involved than a first treatment and may take an extra session.
Is it better to extract the tooth and get an implant?
If the tooth can be saved with a reasonable outlook, keeping it is usually the better choice: no surgery, no bone loss and a natural feel. Extraction and an implant make sense when the tooth is cracked through the root, badly broken down or has severe gum disease.
Will a root-filled tooth change colour?
It can darken gradually over the years, especially at the front. Options include internal bleaching of that tooth or a single crown, so neighbouring healthy teeth can usually be left alone.
