Is Invisalign the same as clear aligners?
Invisalign is one brand of clear aligner, in the same way that a particular make of car is one brand of car. It was among the first systems to reach the market and the name is now often used for any clear tray treatment. Other manufacturers produce aligners that work on the same principle: a digital scan of your teeth is used to plan a series of small movements, and a custom tray is made for each stage.
So when people search for Invisalign in Turkey, what they usually want to know is whether they can have clear aligner treatment here, how it is supervised and what it involves. That is what this page covers. We do not present ourselves as a provider of any particular brand. After your examination the dentist will explain which aligner system is suitable for your teeth and why, and you are welcome to ask about the alternatives.
Who clear aligners suit, and who they do not
Aligners work best for adults and older teenagers with mild to moderate problems who are disciplined about wearing them. Typical good candidates have:
- Moderate crowding or small gaps between the front teeth
- Teeth that have relapsed after braces in the past
- Mild rotations that would make veneers or bonding look uneven
- A bite that needs only modest correction
They are a weaker choice, or need combining with other appliances, when teeth are severely rotated, when large vertical movements are needed, when there is a significant skeletal difference between the jaws, or when gums and bone are not healthy. They are also a poor fit for anyone who suspects they will leave the trays in a drawer. For complex movement, fixed braces are often more predictable. Our orthodontics overview compares the routes side by side.
Clear aligner treatment, step by step
- Photos on WhatsApp (optional): Send smile photos and any recent X-rays for a first opinion on whether aligners could suit you.
- Examination and scan: Free check-up, X-rays and a digital scan or impressions at the clinic in Istanbul.
- Digital plan: You review the planned tooth movements, the estimated number of trays, review visits and the written cost.
- Fitting: Attachments are bonded and your first trays are fitted, with clear instructions on wear and care.
- Progress checks: Photo check-ins and planned visits; refinement trays are made if some teeth need finishing.
- Retainers: Retainers are fitted at the end and worn long term to hold the new positions.
Wearing aligners 20–22 hours a day
Aligners only move teeth while they are in your mouth, which is why the usual instruction is 20 to 22 hours of wear every day. In practice that means taking them out only to eat, to drink anything other than plain water, and to brush.
A few habits make this manageable:
- Keep meals to set times rather than grazing, because every snack means removing the trays and brushing before they go back in.
- Brush, or at least rinse thoroughly, before refitting; trapped food and sugary drinks sit against the enamel and raise the risk of decay.
- Carry the case everywhere. Most lost aligners are wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant.
- Expect each new tray to feel tight for a day or two. That pressure is a sign it is working.
If wear time slips, teeth fall behind the plan and the next trays stop fitting properly. That is the single most common reason aligner treatment takes longer than expected.
Attachments, polishing between teeth and elastics
Aligners rarely work on smooth plastic alone. Most treatments use attachments: small, tooth-coloured bumps of composite resin bonded to certain teeth so the tray has something to grip. They are designed into the plan, placed in one short visit and polished off at the end without harming the enamel.
Where teeth are crowded, the plan may include interproximal reduction, a light polishing of the contact points between teeth to create a little space. It removes only a small, measured amount of enamel and is planned tooth by tooth. Some cases also use small elastics hooked between upper and lower trays to correct the bite. These details matter when you compare offers, because a plan that skips them may promise more than it can deliver.
Refinements: why the first set is rarely the last
Teeth do not always follow the computer simulation exactly. Towards the end of the first series, a few teeth often lag behind, so a new scan is taken and a shorter set of additional trays, called refinements, is made to finish the job. This is a normal part of aligner treatment rather than a sign that something has gone wrong.
Refinements do have practical consequences if you live abroad. They need a fresh scan, which means a visit, and they add a few more weeks or months to the overall timeline. Ask at the start how refinements are handled in your plan and whether they are included in the written cost.
Getting clear aligners in Turkey when you live abroad
Clear aligner treatment from abroad is possible for some people, but it needs a realistic plan rather than a one-off trip. Here is how it typically works for selected cases:
- First visit in Istanbul. Examination, X-rays, a scan, and a discussion of the digital plan. Attachments are fitted when the trays are ready, which may mean waiting in Istanbul or returning.
- Photo check-ins. Between visits you send photographs on WhatsApp at agreed points so the dentist can see whether trays are seating properly.
- Planned review visits. Some checks cannot be done by photo: adjusting attachments, polishing between teeth, a refinement scan, and fitting retainers at the end.
What remote monitoring cannot do is fix a tray that cracks, an attachment that falls off or a tooth that stops tracking without a visit. If you are in Istanbul often, this is easy. If you would struggle to come back two or three times over the course of treatment, aligners from a dentist near home may serve you better, and you could still visit us later for whitening or bonding once your teeth are straight. Invisalign cost in Turkey vs the UK: what drives the price
Patients often look at clear aligners in Turkey because treatment generally costs less than in the UK or the USA, but the figure depends on far more than the country. The main factors are:
- Complexity and number of trays. A short course for the front teeth is a very different job from full correction of both arches.
- The aligner system chosen. Different manufacturers price their products differently.
- Refinements and whether they are included.
- Number of visits and whether your travel costs are part of your own calculation.
- Retainers at the end, which are essential and should be in the plan.
- Any work needed first, such as fillings or a professional clean.
When comparing, add your flights and stays for every review visit. We give a written plan with the full cost after examination, and we can give a preliminary view from photos sent on WhatsApp.
Possible problems with aligner treatment
Clear aligners are a safe and well-established treatment, though not risk-free. Tenderness for a day or two with each new tray is common, and the edges can irritate the tongue at first. Decay can develop if sugary drinks are sipped with trays in. Some people notice a slight lisp for the first few days. Teeth can relapse if retainers are not worn, and, as with braces, mild root shortening and gum recession are possible. Severe or skeletal problems may not be fully corrected with aligners alone, which is something the dentist will tell you before you commit.
