What does a cosmetic dentist do?
Cosmetic dentistry is the part of dentistry that changes how teeth look: their colour, shape, length, position and the frame the gums give them. It is not a separate medical specialty in most countries, so “cosmetic dentist” usually means a general dentist with a strong interest and training in aesthetic work.
A good cosmetic plan still starts with health. Decay, gum disease, cracked teeth and bite problems are found and treated first, because a beautiful restoration on an unhealthy foundation does not last. After that, the guiding idea is simple: use the smallest intervention that achieves the result you want. Removing enamel is permanent, so treatments that keep your own tooth intact deserve to be considered before those that do not.
Which cosmetic treatment for which problem?
The table below is a starting point. Your dentist may suggest something different after examining your teeth, gums and bite.
| Your concern | Often enough on its own | When more is needed | Usually not needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow or stained teeth | Cleaning and whitening | Veneers for stains that do not whiten | Crowns on healthy teeth |
| Small chips or uneven edges | Edge bonding | Veneers if several teeth need reshaping | Crowns |
| Gaps between teeth | Bonding, or aligners | Veneers for wider or multiple gaps | Crowns |
| Crooked or crowded teeth | Clear aligners or braces | Aligners first, then bonding or veneers | Crowns to “straighten” sound teeth |
| Worn, short teeth | Bonding for mild wear | Veneers or crowns, often with a night guard | Depends on the cause of wear |
| Old crowns, dark fillings | Replacing the old work | New zirconia or E.max crowns | Treating neighbouring healthy teeth |
| Gummy or uneven gumline | Gum contouring | Contouring with veneers or orthodontics | Longer porcelain teeth alone |
How we help you choose
- Tell us what bothers you: Send photos of your smile and a short note on what you would like to change.
- Preliminary opinion: A dentist suggests the likely options, starting with the least invasive, and the time you may need in Istanbul.
- Examination in Istanbul: Free examination and X-ray to check teeth, gums and bite before any cosmetic decision.
- Written plan: You receive the recommended option, alternatives, timing and total cost in writing, with no obligation.
Stained, yellow or dull teeth
For most discolouration, start with a professional clean and then teeth whitening. Surface stain from tea, coffee or smoking often comes off with cleaning alone, and whitening lightens the colour inside the tooth. Grey or banded staining, very dark single teeth and patches that do not respond may need bonding or veneers to cover them. Old fillings and crowns will not whiten, which is worth knowing before you decide.
Chipped, worn or uneven teeth
Small chips and uneven edges are where composite bonding shines. It is added to the tooth without drilling, completed in a single visit, and can be repaired easily. If several front teeth are worn short, or you want a bigger change in shape, porcelain veneers last longer and resist staining.
Wear itself has a cause, often grinding, acid erosion or an uneven bite. A cosmetic dentist should look for that cause and protect the new work, for example with a night guard, otherwise the same wear simply continues on the new surfaces.
Gaps between teeth
A single small gap, such as between the two upper front teeth, can often be closed with bonding in one appointment. Several gaps, or a gap caused by teeth drifting, may be better treated by moving the teeth with aligners. Very wide gaps closed with bonding or veneers alone can leave teeth looking too broad, so the choice depends on the size of the space and the proportions of your smile.
Crooked or crowded teeth
When teeth are crooked, orthodontics is the conservative answer, because it moves the teeth rather than reshaping them. Clear aligners or braces usually take 12–24 months and are mainly worn at home, so they are not a holiday treatment, but they can be planned to fit around trips.
Veneers or crowns are sometimes offered as “instant orthodontics”. On mildly irregular teeth, thin veneers can work. On noticeably crowded teeth, making them look straight often requires cutting into healthy tooth, which is a high price for a cosmetic result. Many patients get the best outcome from a few months of aligners followed by bonding or veneers.
Old crowns, dark fillings and a gummy smile
Older crowns with a dark line at the gum, grey metal-based crowns and stained white fillings are common reasons people see a cosmetic dentist. Replacing them with metal-free zirconia or E.max crowns, or with new tooth-coloured fillings, can make a large difference without touching the healthy teeth next to them.
If your teeth look short because too much gum shows, the solution may lie in the gums rather than the teeth. Gum contouring reshapes the gumline so the teeth appear in better proportion, and it is often combined with other treatment. Gum health is checked first; inflamed gums are treated before any reshaping.
Cosmetic dentistry in Turkey when several problems come together
If you have more than one of these concerns, the treatments need to be planned as one design so that colours, shapes and gum levels match. That is a smile makeover, with its own design and mock-up stage. Whatever you choose, ask three questions: how much natural tooth will be removed, how long the result is likely to last, and what maintenance it will need. To start, you can send us your photos for a free preliminary opinion.
