Orthodontics in Istanbul: braces, aligners and retainers

Orthodontics in Istanbul straightens crowded, gapped or rotated teeth with fixed braces or removable clear aligners, usually over 12 to 24 months. Because teeth move slowly and need regular check-ups, it works best for people who live in or near Istanbul, visit often, or can commit to planned review visits. We start with a free examination and an honest opinion on which route fits.

What does orthodontic treatment actually do?

Orthodontic treatment moves teeth through the jawbone using gentle, steady pressure. As a tooth is pushed, the bone on one side is slowly resorbed and new bone forms on the other, so the tooth travels without being loosened for good. That biological process is the reason it cannot be rushed: push too hard and you risk damaging the roots or the gum rather than speeding things up.

People come to us for orthodontics in Istanbul for a mix of reasons. Some dislike crowding or gaps in the front teeth. Others have a bite problem, such as an overbite, an underbite, a crossbite or an open bite, that wears teeth unevenly or makes cleaning hard. And a growing group are adults who want their teeth lined up before cosmetic work, so that veneers or crowns can be thinner and more natural.

Braces, clear aligners or short alignment: which route fits you?

There are three broad routes, and the right one depends on how much movement your teeth need and how often you can be seen. The table below is a starting point; the dentist confirms the choice after examining you and taking X-rays.

For a closer look at each option, see our pages on metal, ceramic and lingual braces and on clear aligner treatment. Short alignment is not a separate appliance; it can be done with either braces or aligners, but with a narrower goal.

How orthodontic treatment usually unfolds

  1. Examination and records: A free check-up with X-rays, photographs and a scan or impressions so the bite and tooth positions can be studied properly.
  2. Treatment plan: The dentist explains which route suits you, roughly how long it will take, how often you will need to be seen and the full written cost.
  3. Fitting: Braces are bonded in one appointment, or aligners are fitted with any small tooth-coloured attachments they need.
  4. Regular reviews: Adjustments or progress checks every few weeks so tooth movement can be guided and corrected if it drifts off plan.
  5. Finishing: Final detailing of the bite, then braces are removed or the last aligners are completed.
  6. Retention: Retainers are fitted the same day or soon after and worn long term to protect the result.

Why orthodontics is rarely a one-trip treatment

Orthodontic treatment in Istanbul is not something you can complete on a week-long visit, and we would rather say so up front. Crowns or veneers can be finished in days because the work happens in the mouth and the lab. Orthodontics is different: the work happens inside the bone, month after month, and someone needs to check that each tooth is moving as planned.

In practice, treatment here tends to suit three groups of people:

  • People living in or near Istanbul, including expats, students and those working here on longer contracts, who can come in every few weeks without flying.
  • Frequent visitors who are in the city regularly for family or business and can line their trips up with review dates.
  • Selected clear aligner patients abroad, where the case is simple enough to be monitored with planned visits in Istanbul plus photo check-ins in between, and where the patient accepts that some appointments cannot be done remotely.

If none of these describes you, the honest advice may be to have orthodontics closer to home and come to Istanbul afterwards for any cosmetic work. Our guide to dental tourism in Turkey explains which treatments fit a short stay and which do not.

Adult orthodontics: is it too late to straighten your teeth?

It is rarely too late. Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the gums and the bone supporting them are healthy. Many of the adults we see had braces as teenagers, stopped wearing their retainer and watched the lower front teeth drift back. Others never had treatment at all.

Adult orthodontics does come with a few extra checks:

  • Gum health first. Moving teeth through inflamed gums can accelerate bone loss, so any gum disease is treated before anything is fitted. Our gum treatment page explains what that involves.
  • Existing fillings, crowns and missing teeth. These change how forces are applied and sometimes how the final result is planned.
  • Slower movement. Adult bone is denser, so treatment can take a little longer than in a teenager.
  • Jaw size. Braces and aligners move teeth, not jaws. A significant skeletal mismatch in an adult may need surgery combined with orthodontics, which we would discuss openly and refer on if appropriate.

Straightening teeth before veneers: less drilling, better results

If your teeth are crowded or twisted, a short course of alignment before veneers can make a real difference to how much enamel has to be removed. When a tooth sits too far forward, a veneer can only line up with its neighbours if that tooth is reduced heavily. Bring it back into line first and the veneer can often be thin, sometimes with minimal preparation.

This is one of the most useful things to know if you are worried about so-called Turkey teeth, where healthy teeth are cut down to stumps to fake a straight smile. A few months of alignment, followed by veneers or bonding, is slower but usually kinder to your teeth. In some cases alignment and whitening alone are enough, and no veneers are needed at all.

Retainers: the part of treatment that never quite ends

Retainers are what keep teeth straight once braces or aligners are finished, and they are not optional. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back towards where they started, and they keep shifting slightly throughout life even if you never had orthodontics.

There are two main types. A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth; it works around the clock but needs careful cleaning with floss threaders or interdental brushes. A removable retainer is a clear tray, similar to an aligner, usually worn full time for a period and then at night. Many people end up with both. Plan on night-time wear for the long term, and replace removable retainers when they crack or stop fitting snugly.

Risks and limitations to know about

Orthodontic treatment is very safe when planned and supervised properly, but it is not without risk. The main ones are:

  • Decay and white marks around brackets or under aligners if cleaning and diet are not kept up.
  • Root shortening, which is common in a mild form and usually harmless, but which is one reason forces are kept gentle.
  • Gum recession where teeth are moved through thin gum, particularly in adults.
  • Relapse if retainers are not worn.
  • Soreness for a few days after each adjustment or new set of aligners.

Results also depend on your jaw shape, your bite and how closely you follow instructions. We will tell you what is realistic for your teeth rather than promising a perfect outcome.

Starting orthodontic treatment at our Istanbul clinic

The first step is a free examination at our clinic on Kennedy Avenue in Zeytinburnu, with X-rays and photographs. If orthodontics makes sense, we take a scan or impressions, explain the options that suit your teeth and your circumstances, and give you a written plan with the full cost and the expected number of visits. There is no obligation to start.

If you live abroad, you can send recent photos and any X-rays on WhatsApp first. We can usually tell you from these whether your case might be suitable for monitored aligners or whether braces closer to home would be the wiser choice. You can reach us by WhatsApp on +90 544 835 52 61.

Frequently asked questions

How long does orthodontic treatment take in Istanbul?
Most comprehensive cases take about 12 to 24 months, though it depends on how far your teeth need to move, your age and whether you choose braces or aligners. Simple cosmetic alignment of the front teeth can take a few months. The dentist gives you an estimated timeline after examining you, and it may be adjusted as treatment progresses.
Can I have orthodontics in Turkey if I live in the UK?
Sometimes, but it needs honest planning. Braces require adjustment visits every few weeks, which is hard to manage from abroad. Simple clear aligner cases can occasionally be monitored with planned visits to Istanbul plus photo check-ins. If regular trips are not realistic, having orthodontics at home and visiting us afterwards for cosmetic work is often the better option.
Are you looking for an orthodontist in Istanbul for adults only?
No. We see adults, teenagers and children for orthodontic assessments. Adults make up a large share of patients asking about straightening teeth, often after earlier treatment relapsed. Children are usually assessed around the age of seven, when problems with jaw growth or crowding can be spotted early, even if treatment itself starts later.
Is orthodontic treatment painful?
It is usually uncomfortable rather than painful. Teeth feel tender for a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted, or after switching to new aligners. Brackets can rub the cheeks at first, which orthodontic wax helps with. Over-the-counter pain relief, if suitable for you, and soft food for a day or two are normally enough.
What does the cost of orthodontics depend on?
Cost depends on the type of appliance, how complex the tooth movement is, how long treatment is expected to last, how many reviews are needed and whether retainers and any refinements are included. After examining you we give a written plan with the full cost, so you know exactly what is covered before deciding.
Do I need to straighten my teeth before getting veneers?
Not always, but it is worth asking. If teeth are crowded or twisted, a short course of alignment often allows veneers to be much thinner, which preserves healthy enamel. In mild cases, alignment and whitening alone may give the result you want without any veneers. The dentist will show you both options after examining your teeth.
Do I have to wear a retainer for ever?
For most people, yes, at least at night. Teeth naturally shift throughout life, and without a retainer they tend to drift back towards their old positions. A fixed wire behind the front teeth, a removable clear retainer, or both are used. Wearing them as advised is the simplest way to protect the time and money spent on treatment.

This page gives general information and is not a substitute for an examination. Whether a treatment is suitable for you, and how long it takes, is decided after your dentist has examined you and reviewed your X-rays.
